Like it or Lump it!

POWER RANKINGS.
Current Team Previous,
1 New England Patriots -
Who else can we put in this spot? They are the favorites to win three titles in a row. And they should be.

2 Philadelphia Eagles -
Of all the teams we watched in the preseason, the Eagles looked the best. Of course, we'll be watching to see when Time Bomb Owens goes off.

3 Pittsburgh Steelers -
Are they talking about head size when they call the Steelers quarterback Big Ben? He is getting way too big for his helmet, and he hasn't played well this summer, which is a worry.

4 Carolina Panthers -
If Stephen Davis is truly back to pound the football, this is a good team. Like the rest, it has warts, such as left tackle and tight end.

5 Atlanta Falcons -
The key question here is whether Michael Vick takes the next step as a passer. If he does, they could top this list at some point.

6 Jacksonville Jaguars -
This is a young team ready to make a big step forward. The offense has to be better than the 16.3 points it averaged last season, but the feeling is it will be.

7 Indianapolis Colts -
We know they'll score points, but has the defense improved that much? They will be there in the end. Peyton Manning will make that happen.

8 Oakland Raiders -
We love offense, and this team is all about that. Look for a huge year from the passing offense. The defense will be better than you think.

9 Baltimore Ravens -
They'd be higher, maybe even right behind the Patriots, if Kyle Boller had shown anything at all in the preseason. Love that D, though.

10 Minnesota Vikings -
A really trendy Super Bowl pick because of all the defensive additions. That's all well and good, but replacing Randy Moss is a lot tougher than they think.

11 Arizona Cardinals -
The addition of Kurt Warner is huge, but the thing people are missing about this team is the defense. It is young, aggressive and talented.

12 Kansas City Chiefs -
Here's another team that will score plenty on offense. But can the defensive additions do enough to get this team into the playoffs?

13 Denver Broncos -
Is this a do-or-die year for Mike Shanahan? Does he finally win a playoff game without John Elway?

14 San Diego Chargers -
A sound, solid team that we think might take a little step back. Not too much, just some. Something like 8-8.

15 Buffalo Bills -
If they had a veteran passer, they'd be higher. There's a lot of concern with J.P. Losman, even if the coaches won't admit it.

16 New York Jets -
Chad Pennington is back throwing, but is he all the way back? Another solid team, but one we think might simply be a wild-card team and no more.

17 New Orleans Saints -
How do they respond to all the problems from Hurricane Katrina? Maybe it helps focus this talented team and it can ride it to big things.

18 St. Louis Rams -
The offense will be explosive, maybe even as good as 1999. The defense will make for a lot of track meets.

19 Seattle Seahawks -
Is this the end of the Mike Holmgren era in Seattle? Or are they a playoff team? Tough call.

20 Green Bay Packers -
Yet another team that will score in bunches on offense and then hope like heck its defense can at least slow down the opposition.

21 Dallas Cowboys -
The big question will be how they protect Drew Bledsoe. If they can, this can be a quality team. We want to see it first.

22 Chicago Bears -
We love rookie Kyle Orton at quarterback and the defense will be special. Watch for a lot of close games.

23 Cincinnati Bengals -
Another trendy pick by some, we still feel they're a year away. Carson Palmer will be better. It's the defense that is a concern.

24 Detroit Lions -
Joey Harrington has to get it done for this to be a playoff team. Can he? We'll find out, but he has a lot of doubters.

25 Houston Texans -
Now in their fourth year, this should be a playoff team. But have they done enough to make that happen? Is David Carr ready to take a major step?

26 Tampa Bay Buccaneers -
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. There are too many questions even for a quality coach like Jon Gruden to get this team into the playoffs.

27 Tennessee Titans -
They don't like the word rebuilding in Tennessee, but that's what the Titans are doing. Jeff Fisher and Steve McNair will give opponents a fight every week.

28 New York Giants -
Tom Coughlin went to the playoffs in his second year in Jacksonville. Can he do it in New York? They'll threaten.

29 Washington Redskins -
Are they still salivating all over Joe Gibbs now? Or is it only a year away from Gregg Williams, a guy we respect a great deal, taking over as coach?

30 Miami Dolphins -
Nick Saban will turn this team around. It will take time, particularly with the quarterback situation he has.

31 San Francisco 49ers -
Poor Mike Nolan. He doesn't have a lot to work with in his first season. Be patient, 49ers fans. It won't happen overnight.

32 Cleveland Browns -
This is a team that will fight each week, but the talent level isn't quite there. Wait a year or so. The new regime will get it there.

Jerry.
