I think Stratego is right about those 'new' players. I'm using my nick for years and everybody knows my style of play. Not fair to have guys coming in with new nicks, but actually are Gravon veterans...
What ranking to use for the pairings? My ranking is a bit lower this year than last year, but my all time ranking is even lower. So use this years ranking. Everybody who isn't ranked for 2013 can use his all time ranking... problem solved.
Can we have a list somewhere of all contestants joining in so far? |

good to have you captain.
@ katama: you share my opinion. And the playerlist is there already for weeks .
@ Stratego Have to discuss this with Zach. I think you mean 6 for a win, 3 for a draw 1 for a lose, like in off-line tournaments? Its not bad and has some advantages but its a bit late to change the rules now at this subject. What do you think Zach?
& Zach: We already have 32 people now. Question is will all be joining cause we didnt hear from some players a while. Should we get some reserve players and close the entrance or should we keep it open and maybe play with a few groups with 5 players? Im in favour of the last one. |

hi,
i posted a list and will update the site with all infos, after we discussed all.
first look: http://gravopedia.gravon.de/index.php/Stratego_Gravon_Championship_2013
i think the rules are clear and it doesnt matter if we change some parts to make it better.
thinking it over i prefer following modus:
we have 4 groups with 8 players.
within the groups all play all - so 7 pairings for each player.
each pairing is a 2 game match.
if a player wins both or if he wins 1 and draw the 2nd he wins the pairing.
this means:
2 wins / 1 win 1 draw => 6 points
2 draws => 3 points
2 losses / 1 loss 1 draw => 1 point.
so each player plays 7 x 2 games within the groups
best 4 of each group go to knock out.
knock out is best of 3
winner is who first get 2 wins
in case that a pairing is in total a draw after 3 games the players have to go on, till one wins. (e.g. 1 win 1 draw each player)
the final and game place 3/4) is best of 5 - with same rule for a draw like mentioned.
so all play a lot of games, but its not 1 game that decides. the best will be the winner. |

I know it isn't really up to me, but I would have thought smaller groups would be better in terms of people managing to play everyone else in the group. If you have to play 7 different people there are going to be missing matches I think. It will be difficult for me as I am only going to be able to play after May 13th. Wouldn't 8 groups of 4 be better, like in the football World Cup or something? Winner from each group advances to the quarter finals or even the top 2 advance to the last 16? |

hi,
the problem is, that 16 people are out after playing just 3 others. short tourney for half of the players.
missing is not the problem, we will create some extra pages with a better oberview than the forum has.

My perception is a matchup is 3 games.. 8 groups... the top 2 from each group can advance. However, we will cap the tournament at 40 members. 5 members per group.
The point of the 3 matches is to give a total point system, i.e. if you win 3-0 you get more points than if you win 2-0, and not the 6-3-1 version. It also allows each player to play 12 games for the tournament in month of May.
It also makes it so for the group stage we can organize by ranks and time zones to ensure that players can play. Whereas each player playing 7 players is more difficult.
Also, we will cap at 40 and I agree with katama... NO MORE new nicks, it is an unfair advantage for guys like me and gpet0 with 10,000 + games here and they know us and it is an advantage.
Thank you |

hi zach,
we can make 40 with 8 groups a 5 players. but 3 times the same opponent sound a little boring. 2 times could be the better way and is more fun.
best 2 of each group go to the final 16 - knock out.
knock out is best of 3 then.

I agree with Zach and Samuel (excellent point there). Lets stick as much as possible to the original rules posted by Zach and me. I agree with your last post, Stratego. And of course you forget people like Rave and Nochance. |

Yeah I think if you use the World cup model, players might only have a few games and be out but thats ok - if you lose your first few games you wont be expecting to qualify anyway so you'd have less incentive to bother trying to play the remaining games. It shouldn't be something that takes up lots of time so only playing 3 or 4 others would be fine, win or lose. |
