I play at both Meta and Gravon although mostly at Meta. From reading messages here it would appear that Meta doesn't have a monpopoly on obnoxious behaviour. I.E. using 15 minutes to make a move, disconnecting when all is lost, profanity in the message board etc... Maybe because most of us 1st played Stratego in Junior High School online sites (or maybe just the Internet) bring out Junior High School behavior. There is an effort now to eliminate or at least reduce profanity on the Meta message board (I'm now a moderator there). I realise that it's been more common at Meta.

I'll have to let WSC Warrior speak on my behalf - regarding my experience at Gravon.
You do not speak like a friend so you can cut that crap out.

Faithless
regarding your meta post:
"Hi all!
Maybe on metaforge someone knows why frank and Commish are talking about things they don t know anything of?
http://www.gravon.de/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=1256#1256
This is one of the topics on Gravon - maybe some of you don t have these problems to take a look around. More than one Stratego-site can t be bad for the Stratego community worldwide.
But, frank and Commish: One community doesn t mean that you come to another place to bring their members over here. Especially if you have nothing to offer - except the fee.
Be open-minded, play on both sites if you like. Don t you wonder why all the Gravon players say they enjoy playing there?
Greetings!
Exactly what did I say that makes you claim "I do not know what I am talking about?"
Was it the comment where I say - I have never played at Gravon, saying I did not want to go tit-for tat on features since I had not played at Gravon? or was it the one that I assume offended you most suggesting wherever you play, if you enjoy it, contributing to the site webmaster is the right thing to do? You do not see messages at meta saying Gravon, what is it good for? - If you did, I would absolutely expect Gravon members to reply to defend their site, but you don't. None of my posts here have been even remotely inflamatory. Must be my upbringing, because I do not trash somebody's house while under their roof.
I actually had a good talk with WSC on Saturday (before I had to run to avoid my wife!)
WSC if you are in midtown - Let's do lunch, my treat.

Hi Commish!
I will not start arguing with you, because you never ever accept some argument which is none of your own. You just do not seem capable of that.
Also I donīt see the sense why you pasted my metaforge-posting into your last Gravon posting - if I would like to have posted it in here, I probably would have done this.
"Metaforge...why bother" is the topics name. I didnīt invent the name, because I didnīt start the topic. As I said frank before: A topics name is no offense. Well, at least not for people who know sarcasm or irony. You see it every day on the newspaper, but let me explain it to you: If you start a text with a provocation in its headline - people get interested.
Itīs nice you want to share the people on meta around you by imputing I wanted to offend them - I didnīt. You know, I know, so pls donīt use your tiny experiences in arguing to make a problem where none is.
Overall I meant both of you, frank and Commish, when I said you donīt have a clue what you are talking about. Have you? frankīs ten points are the proof and you didnīt make a few games here either - as far as I know.
To end it up: If you would be around here, playing, getting to know the people playing here and then would say you have another site you like more - no problem! But you came just in the forum and speaking in some polite language I never heard of you before and talking about some "going together" blabla. Why donīt you just start it by coming over here sometimes. Itīs just that I canīt stand this kind of behaviour which made my posts sounding a little bit more angry than necessary.
You are right about your language: It isnīt inflamatory (except for me because I read you before).
You may pay whoever you want, but if someone does the better work (funny you never talk about that) in a few weeks even you wouldnīt pay the guy who would need years for that. I guess you wouldnīt, maybe you would. I donīt.
Bye

I believe honestly the reason that alot of the meta players stay playing there is simply that they have many games and alot of time invested in their rankings . I have played many games there under unregistered names(until it became time to pay), and the players there are very good and probably would go right to the top of the ranks here, but just don't want to have to "start over" with their ranks, or more likely lose their status at meta. I say this, because anyone who knows and plays this game at both sites would HAVE to agree that the playing of the game at gravon is by far much easier and simple. I don't blame the meta players if this is their reason for staying put there, but I do wish all players could play under one big site.

Maybe you wondered why I was laughing about the way "The Commish" speaks to make people come to Metaforge.
By accident I found some of the things he said last year, when we had hot discussions about the war in Iraq on the metaforge forum.
I pasted all the the things he posted into my posting (he could do as a moderator there). Maybe most things doesnīt make sense for people not knowing my original post, but everyone is able to see that Commish isnīt the nice guy he pretends to be:
HAVE FUN:
Take a special look at the last sentence he posted
(The US government does not control the media as is the case in Iraq and your philosophical homeland, the USSR)
(typical leftist, accusing H-Tec of being brainwashed because he has an opposing point of view - I respect peoples right to have an opposing view - commonly the left makes total idiots of themselves when they try to make their case which usually is nothing more than hating George W. Bush)
(Wouldn't a true liberal fight for the freedom of an oppressed people - The Euro left want to protect a brutal dictatorship)
(The world will get the benefit, stability in a region vs. a brutal dictatorship that threatens all neighboring counties - War not about money but you can believe that as I am sure you do)
(They were not protesting peacefully- they were puking and s h i t t ing on the street - DG was in Frisco at the time the protesters were the typical anarchist that frequest the WMF meetings)
(argument already flawed - they were dumbass liberals like yourself)
(The US Government does not control the media - as is the case in Iraq, and your ideological homeland the USSR)
(The US is strong and will stay that way - because we do not listen to dumb a s s es like yourself - Peace through strength)
(The US liberates oppressed people while Europe sits on its a s s, Kosovo- Afghanastan, Kuwait - and our biggest misstake - France 1944)
(But you can overthrow a brutal dictatorship to free people vs. being a european liberal p u s s y who stands by and pontificates while people get slaughtered as in the Balkans)
(nonsense? how about the ricin found in France and G.B. lately - that is p u s s y stuff compared to some VX gas that saddaam has.)
(noone is questioning the last election, just the Bush Haters, they do not have a real argument - they just hate Bush)
(That is right - you do not know s h i t - you are part of a weakened morally nuetured European Socialist order that coddles dictators vs. making the hard decision to do what is right)
(who would own/watch that crap anyways? why pick two performers who O.D's on Herion????)
The people in Iraq have been repressed for years - wait and see how they will react to liberation)

i havnt played meta for years and dont know guys from there but after reading meta forum i noticed few have tried gravon and complain about pieces, numbers etc well the pieces can be changed to american which are the same as at meta or pretty close to it at the very least and numbers can be changed also thus marshal can be 10 or 1 so maybe guys need imforming about such things first eh instead of playing then complaining without knowing things can be done , that goes to you bobford and anyone else trying gravon

I've already stated in a message up above that I play at both Meta and Gravon although mostly at Meta. I didn't really state my reasons at the time so here goes.
1) I really don't like Gravon's chatroom. It's a real archaic command line interface ie: type whisper/ nickname. At meta all you have to do is click on the nickname of the player you want to whisper to, type your message & hit return.
2) Players at Gravon seem to take a long time to make their moves. I know there was a thread here complaining about someone complaining about slow moves in the course of a game. At meta I think it's 90 seconds max per move. Part of the reason may be mechanism at gravon that forces you to click OK after your opponent strikes one of your pieces. Years of playing at Meta & NIR have conditioned me to equate clicking a mouse to that's my move now it's your turn. Click the mouse, 10 to 15 seconds go by, damn I have to move.
3) Loyalty, I've been a member of Metaforge for almost 3 years now. Chip has put a lot into meta and it's basically a one man operation. I don't believe he's getting rich off it.
I know that you can select ascending, descending or no numbers. European or American set graphics. When I've played at gravon I use the Euro set with ascending numbers (marshall = #1) go figure.
Well there you go. I'll still occaisionaly play at gravon, but I still prefer meta.
Faithless, what do politics have to do with this current discussion? Unless you're flame baiting. _________________ Metaforge Message Board Moderator |

Unfortunately it was politics, yes.
I just wanted to point out that The Commish isnīt the nice guy he pretends to be just for making people come to meta. Itīs kind of an information for Europeans. They should know what answers they could get if they want to start or take part of a serious discussion. I didnīt see people insult each other here yet, just for having different views.
Fortunately I found this old posting of Commish, which shows another side of him and the metaforge message board. I wouldnīt be too proud to be a moderator there, goo. After all I am still learning new words over there, like "- gorilla humper." And I have to admit that itīs sometimes funny if you donīt take people too serious and you donīt have problems with homophobic or ultra-conservative views.
I didnīt want to start a political discussion nor refuel an old one.
But - maybe as a different topic? Maybe one of the other 5 guys being around in this message board will find it interesting so this board is going to live a little bit?
