what i had to experience today forces me to quit with this game.
i always thought ruben is a nice and fair player.
after my ul tournament game today against him i must say i was totally wrong. i don't want to bore you with details from the game. it's enough to say, he was way behind and searched for a draw situation. so he took his scout and jumped around. unfortunately i had to protect and was not able to move with other pieces.
the horrible thing is obviously the rules don't forbid such running-away-of-an-decision - situation. the end of this story is i lost coz after i made a different move he could use the 5-steps-rule to an advantage.

what i really liked in this situation was the behaviour of ruben. i was even enthusiastic about finding such a draw situation and was jumping around with "its legal what i'm doing ... it's legal what i'm doing". after he realized he could win this coz of the 5-step-rule i asked him he could recover his honour with a draw-offer. you can imagine his opinion about that...

now many of you probably won't understand my anger. i guess all of the live-tournament-players would do the same in rubens situation. but i have NO understanding for this since we play a game of winning and losing.

i won't play this game any longer. i had anyway very little time to play these days. but after ruben opened my eyes i won't come back to gravon.

thanks guys

Hi Skywalker,

Well, That is not my style of gaming, even if I could get the last needed draw, for a tournament win.

First of all I want to say that I understand Skywalkers anger. He played a nice game.

As you already know, in my opinion it was indeed legal what I did. I don’t see it as unfair, but everyone has his own opinion. I don’t have a problem with that. I know it is hard to accept a draw when you play good and maybe deserved the win. In Football and most other sports it is not always the best who win. You have to accept it.

When I see a chance to get a draw I will use it, I don’t give up. I offered him a remise.

Well Sky could not stand it the game was getting a remise. (In fact he could have won if he took a risk with his scout). And he made a mistake, so I could indeed win on the 5 step rule eventually.

When Skywalker noticed it, he suddenly offered me a few times a draw, and he stopped moving so I had to wait another 15 minutes.

He even Blackmailed me with going to the forum when I didn’t accept the draw.

Well I think you, Skywalker are the unsportive one, and its very sad to see that you now dramatically stop with stratego. However its your own choice.

Think about it.

Greetings Ruben87

(We will hear soon if it was legal what I did, if it was not I will apologies)

Hi luke

Sounds like a very unfortunate incident.

I don't really know the full details of the game.......so it is very hard to confidently speak about what you have wrote.

What i will say is that....... it would be a real shame if you were to give up playing stratego for this 1 reason.

I don't agree with ALL the rules......and would change 1 or 2 ......if i had the chance to......but we dont set the rules.

What i would also like to say is that " I know you have fully enjoyed your playing days here......hell......you nearly went to Belgium for the World Championships in Classic. You enjoy the game.....and you are an asset to both the game and your country.......dont throw it away.

Everyone has difficulty finding time to play.......at some point. That is ok....... we all have a life outside the game....... no shame in that. Hopefully this will be the ONLY reason you do not play.........and hopefully you will join me for a few games in the "New Year" .......should you find some spare hours to play.

Please let me know.......what you would like to do about the tourney......should i forfeit your games? OR do you want to carry on?

The ONLY thing i can definately say about that game....is that.......the admin decision will be final. "Stratego" knows the rules......so he will hopefully be the one who makes the decision about the game result.
Like the rules or not......everyone has to obide by them.

Hope to hear from you soon my friend.

Regards,

Ace

hello,

reading the threat i can imagine that it is frustating to loose a game this way.
i had several of these looses, also at the final table in a wc.

on the other hand, i cannot find anything which violates the rules.
in addition i think both agree that the win was by the rules.

it happends (and its no rules question) again and again. you can always
find or create situations, when a rule offers the loosing player a chance to
win or for a draw.

looking at soccer its the same if millions of people see one team playing
for 89 mins and having 100 of chances. then one mistake and all is over.

its part of this and nearly all other games. if you are honest it was a
mistake and who will judge the opponent player for taking the win.

but i also saw different endings. its not a rare situation that players offer
you a win in a board tourney, even if they have a sure draw. i also did
and do it, but -to be honest -not to everybody. it depends if the players
do it also.

of course, if both parties want to check the game by me or spion, please
ask. but we cannot decide for a "better" playing, we just look at the facts.

stratego

Hi Luke,

In Ruben's defense.... some players are very competitive and they hate to lose. A draw is certainly better then a loss. I know it's frustrating, it's annoying and it's not fun, but what he did with his scout was legal. I have been in a situation like yours several times. I really hate accepting the draw when I know that I played a better game then my opponent, but sometimes you are left with no other option.

If you want to leave Gravon, that is your choice, but please don't quit the game. Stratego is very fun and exciting! Yes, the rules can be frustrating in certain situations, but don't let one bad experience change how you feel about the game.

Skywalker, you have to "man up" and deal with the fact that these things happen. I have been in games where I completely dominated only to have my opponent pull off a last ditch berserk effort and hit my flag. I have often built a lead, only to see it disappear with a mindless lotto hit, then build up another lead only to lose it again to a lucky lotto hit! These situations - but are unavoidable sometimes. What you can do is learn to refine your game to minimize these possibilities. Every bad experience has a lesson for you to grow from.
