Here are the rules for "Fog Stratego" which could not be played with a regular board -- only with a computer program. The idea is based on the fact you really can't see forever, especially if fighting in a fog.

Some definitions first:

To "see" another piece is to know it is there, but not necessarily to know its rank ("Marshall," etc.).

To "know" another piece is to know it is there and to also know what rank it is.

1) All pieces are set up as in Classic Stratego.

2) All pieces move and attack as in Classic Stratego.

3) You can only see an opposing pieces if you have a piece that is next to an opposing piece in any of the eight directions (including diagonals). Also see rule #4.

4) Spies can see up two spaces straight in each of eight directions, but not over any other piece that is one space.

5) As in Ultimate Lightning, the attacker wins if a piece attacks another of the same rank.

6) When a bomb explodes, any opposing pieces immediately next to it (on the side that was killed) may move on the following turn.

7) You know opponent pieces in the same manner as for Classic Stratego.
